The greatest feature of NotebookLM is its ability to quickly generate multiple versions of content from the same source material, all managed and shared on a single platform. This accelerates the entire learning process from input to output. After familiarizing yourself with the basic functions of NotebookLM, this article will quickly get you up to speed on the latest major updates. The newly added features not only make information integration more efficient but also make the learning process more complete! The main updates from late August to early September are concentrated in the right-hand Studio section: Audio Overview, Video Overview, Reports, and the brand-new Flashcards and Quiz functions.
Support for Chinese and Multiple Languages
Initially, NotebookLM only supported English, but it has now rapidly expanded to over 80 languages, including Traditional Chinese! The most discussed features online, Audio Overview and Video Overview, can now be generated in Chinese. The system will output content based on your Google account’s preferred language, but you can manually switch the output language before each generation. Within the same notebook, you can even create content in different languages, making NotebookLM the ultimate tool for cross-lingual learning and sharing.
1. Audio Overview
Originally limited to a one-click generation of a two-host podcast format, you can now choose from four modes, offering more diverse presentation styles:
- Deep Dive: Two hosts, one explaining while the other chimes in with agreement and supporting points.
- Brief: A single host providing a summary.
- Critique: Two hosts offering constructive criticism and suggestions.
- Debate: Two hosts discussing the topic from different perspectives.
Currently, the generated audio overviews are about 8-10 minutes long, primarily based on the length of the source material, but can be adjusted to default, shorter, or longer as needed. You can also specify the sources, topics, or specific audience the audio overview should focus on.
2. Video Overview
The current video overview function can automatically generate a presentation-style video with voice-over narration. The content usually starts with an introduction, followed by a point-by-point analysis, emphasizing key points along the way to clarify the structure. The system can also extract images, quotes, charts, and data from the source material, transforming abstract concepts into concrete visualizations to make the presentation video easier to understand. More diverse video summary formats are expected in the future, bringing more dynamic ways of expression.
3. Mind Map
Generate the core concepts of your source material with a single click, presented in a hierarchical structure of topics, branches, and sub-branches. Besides downloading a static image, you can also expand or collapse branches within NotebookLM and continue to ask follow-up questions in the chat interface. (Note: Mind Map was not part of this major update.)
4. Reports
There are eight formats to choose from when generating a report. Whether it’s for news, research, business, or art, and even in different languages, NotebookLM can generate a corresponding report, helping users present information more flexibly.
- Four fixed formats: Custom Report, Briefing Doc, Study Guide, and Blog Post.
- Four suggested formats: Dynamically suggests the most suitable format based on the source material.
5. Flashcards
After uploading the required source material, simply click on “Flashcards” in the right-hand Studio to automatically generate questions. Flip the card to see the answer. This is just like common vocabulary cards—a question on one side and an answer on the other—allowing you to reinforce memory anytime, helping to firmly commit knowledge to memory. The difference is that NotebookLM’s flashcards go a step further by providing an “Explain” function. Clicking it will display the original source material in the chat generation area, preventing rote memorization and making learning more contextual and understandable.
6. Quiz
NotebookLM can also automatically generate multiple-choice questions based on the content. Users need to select the best answer from four options to test their true understanding of the topic. After answering, regardless of whether it’s correct or not, the system will provide an explanation. You can also view the source details in the chat generation area via the “Explain” button. After the quiz, the system will display your “Score,” “Accuracy,” “Correct Answers,” “Incorrect Answers,” and “Skipped Questions,” and offer options to “Review Answers” or “Try Again” to help you continuously improve.
Both Flashcards and Quizzes can be customized by topic, number of questions, and difficulty level to better align with personal learning goals. Furthermore, when a completed notebook is shared, the configured flashcards and quizzes are shared along with it. Users can also learn new information by referencing notebooks created by others. NotebookLM even recommends “Featured Notebooks” from authoritative media outlets like The Economist to expand learning resources.
