Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) announced the updates of the Mandatory Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme on 30 March 2023, which will expand to cover three additional categories of appliances and gas cookers starting from September.

The EMSD anticipates that the program’s expansion will result in savings of 1.1 billion kWh per year, and the next review will consider legislation to ban the sale of appliances that do not meet energy efficiency standards.

Starting from September, LED lights, gas cookers, and instant gas water heaters will be required to carry energy efficiency labels. Gas cooker labels will feature a pink background to indicate their gas-powered nature. The EMSD’s mobile application, which includes an energy-saving calculator, will be updated to allow users to compare the energy efficiency of different products by scanning these labels.

Collaboration between Master Concept and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD)

In response to the EMSD’s decision and plan, Master Concept collaborates with the EMSD to develop the “E&M Connect” mobile application, which was launched two years ago in 2020. With the “energy-saving calculator” feature in the application, users can scan energy efficiency labels to view and compare the energy efficiency and estimated annual electricity costs of different product models, and identify those with the highest level of energy efficiency. The application has already been downloaded 20,000 times and will continue to add new features, including the ability to access information on gas technicians and electrical professionals.
